Otumfuo Directs Mowire Queen to Withdraw From Stool Selection Process

A new directive from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has altered the process to fill the vacant male stool at Mowire, with the Queen of the town, Obaapanin Agyaponmaa Konadu, asked to stay out of the selection exercise.

The Asantehene ruled that the responsibility should instead be handled by the royal family, led by the family head, Opanin Kwabena Ofori, who has now been authorised to steer the customary procedures for choosing a candidate.

The decision was announced during proceedings of the Kumasi Traditional Council held at Manhyia Palace on March 13, 2025.

As part of the arrangements, Oheneba Owusu Afriyie IV, Apagyahene, has been appointed to monitor and supervise the process.

In Akan custom, the occupant of the female stool ordinarily plays a leading role in nominating a successor for a vacant male stool. However, tradition also provides that where the queen is not a member of the royal bloodline, the responsibility is transferred to the royal family, requiring her to step aside from the exercise.
